Anglesey

Home A group of villagers recently spent a weekend exploring Anglesey. Fourteen hardy souls set off for a lunch time rendezvous at the 'Cat and Fiddle', the second highest - and probably remotest - pub in England between Buxton and Macclesfield.

The second leg of the journey was accomplished by various routes either with or without the aid of satellite navigation and in some cases by the tried and tested means of follow the leader.

Everyone was booked into a 17th century manor house near Beaumaris which purported to sleep 18 when full and proved to be more than able to do so. The photographs in the literature failed to do it justice. It was absolutely magnificent. The rooms were beautifully proportioned and the two lounges were a bonus. One was the TV room, and the other a drawing room with a lovely open fire for which logs were provided. The huge dining table was easily big enough for us all, although passing dishes around proved a bit of a challenge as no-one could reach the middle whilst seated. Soon after our arrival we were tucking into a wonderful buffet supper prepared in Egmanton and transported safely there.

The kitchen was a dream and the weekend was punctuated by cries of 'You wouldn't believe it but I've just found .....' ranging from two toasters and three fridges to a huge freezer, coffee and bread makers. During our brief stay most of the appliances got little use, although the karaoke machine was pressed into service on Saturday night. Certain people showed they had skills no-one guessed at.

During the weekend we experienced all four seasons - at times in rapid succession. Unfortunately the heavy rain fell the first night and was followed by a fierce hail storm the following morning. This made the ground very wet and not at all suitable for hiking across country. Most people made it on to the beach to blow away the cobwebs with the gale force winds on Sunday.

There was talk of narrow boats being a good idea for a future excursion, so who knows where we might find ourselves next year.
